Freiman Stoltzfus Original Amish Watercolor Signed/Dated
This charming painting of Amish children was done by well-known artist Freiman Stoltzfus. Mr. Stoltzfus was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, into an Amish-Mennonite family. His art is influenced by the colors and patterns of Pennsylvania German art. His work is in corporate and private collections in the USA, Europe, and Asia. It is significant that the children do not have faces, as Amish dolls do not. The Amish believe that picturing faces makes them appear more "worldly", which is not acceptable. This practice also emphasizes their beliefs that everyone is alike in the eyes of God and only God can make people. The painting is signed and dated lower right "Freiman 1992," making it one of his early works. Interestingly, under magnification, you can see some of his pencil lines that he sketched in before painting. On the reverse, Mr. Stoltzfus drew in ink a sketch of an Amish man's hat and an Amish woman's bonnet and signed it in his script Freiman Stoltzfus 11/7/92. It is framed in a one inch wide glossy dark brown wood frame and double matted with cream and blue. The overall measurements are approximately 9 inches by 7 inches and the actual picture area is 4 1/2 by 2 1/2. There's a sawtooth hanger on the upper back edge but this painting would do very well as a shelf sitter. It's in superb condition and a folk art treasure. This one has second signature from the artiest Freiman Stoltzfus, see third picture.
