Whether you’re an auction pro, or an auction newbie, there are basic rules that you should know before attending any auction. No two auctions are ever the same, therefor we put together this handy dandy worksheet to help keep you auction seekers “in-the-know.” Keep in mind these are the basic guidelines. Any specific facility rules are always announced by the auctioneer before the sale.

Call Ahead! Don’t waste your valuable time and gas by driving to a cancelled auction. Always call the facility the day before or day of to confirm their auction.

Cash Only! All of our auctions are CASH only. We do not accept Credit / Debit Cards, Checks, Money Orders, Ex-Spouses or farm animals. Do not bid on a unit if you do not have the CASH to pay for it. The sale will be immediately canceled and everyone will begin to give you evil looks. It’s not pretty.

Cash Only – Part 2 - DEPOSITS: 99.9% of our auctioned units will require a CASH deposit. This amount ranges an average of $40 - $100 Per Unit. Each facility is different and will have different deposit requirements. The Auctioneer will announce the deposit amount(s) before the sale. Deposits are REFUNDABLE (yeaaay!) But on 1 condition – You must clean out the entire unit. (See “Facility Rules further down)

Cash Only – Part 3 – UNCLE SAM: Unless you are a business and have a resale license, you’ll also have to pay sales tax. Sale tax is based upon the hammer price (aka your bid) and is immediately due, along with the deposit. If you are a first time bidder and have a resale license, bring it with you. Otherwise, you will be charged the tax. Again, payment must be in the form of CASH.

Auction Rules: 1.) Arrive 10-15 Minutes early - All Public auctions are free to attend. (If you are ever charged to attend one, turn / run away!) Most facilities will have a sign-up sheet either posted out front or in the office / lobby area on the counter. If site does not have a sign up page, then the auctioneer will provide one upon arrival. This form is for internal use only and is not sold or shared with others. The purpose of signing in / registering is to provide proof of a public sale and the number of attendees. Not all, but some facilities will require a government ID in order to bid. Everyone (18 & over) in your party is required to sign in.

(a) What you see from the door is what you are bidding on. (The entire contents) You may not enter the unit at any time.

All units are sold AS IS which means the good, the bad, the ugly and the broken. There are no warranties or guarantees. In order to receive your deposit back, EVERYTHING must be removed within the designated removal period, which is announced prior to start of auction start.
2.) It is YOUR responsibility to be seen or heard when bidding.

3.) You must provide your own padlock to secure your new treasures. If you plan on bidding, and did not bring one, then stop by the office and purchase a lock before the auction starts.

4.) Auctioneer reserves the right to: (a) Revoke the bidding privileges of any bidder (b) Refuse a bid (c) Cancel the sale at any time prior to having said “SOLD!”

5.) Auctioneer has the legal right to remove the following items (if identified from front of door): any alcohol, fire arms, human remains (cremation) and / or tobacco. These items are required to be turned over to the proper authorities

Forrest O’Brien has been conducting auctions for years. He’s auctioned off everything from cattle to caskets, from airplanes to houses. This is why when looking for an Auctioneer, you should consider one with  experience. Not every auction is the same, and audiences are not predictable. Hiring a quick thinking Auctioneer who can handle most unpleasant and positive situations will be an asset to your sale.

Through out the years, Forrest has been interviewed by journalist from newspapers, magazines and even appeared on prime time evening news. He’s even filmed a short piece with Comedian Jack Vale.
