Driving Instructions - This estate home is 3.7 (under 4 miles) from Indiana 90 Toll Road exit 96. Don't be fooled by some mapquest print outs or some GPS. They name streets, that aren't what you see on the street for road signs.
Take Exit 96 toward Elkhart E, left (south) on County Rd 17-CR 17 (signs for CR 17/US 20/IN-120), go 2.2. mi to traffic light (it's immediately before, north of crossing bridge for St. Joe River- don't go over or south of the river-; turn right (west) on CR 10* (E Bristol St), go 1.5 mi to 1st traffic light, left (south) on CR 15* (Streeter Ln), go .2/10ths mi. & bare right (west) on Greenleaf Blvd., estate home is down 1/2 mi. on right (north), it's blonde brick ranch w/green trim - PARK only on one side of Greenleaf on right (north), same side home is located. Don't touch your tires onto neighbors grass, residents here WON'T like it. But make sure there's plenty of space for eastbound traffic to easily come through.
* Some maps read Bristol St for CR 10. & Streeter Ln. for CR 15, but the street signs at these junctions only read CR 10 or CR 15 names, further down they do become Bristol or Streeter names, but it won't help you here when you need to turn at CR 10 or CR 15.

About the artist - Elkhart, Indiana Willi Holzshuh - Yugoslavian born, as a teenager in 1930's he studied at art school in Vienna or Düsseldorf. Mr. Holzshuh learned all art forms, but his favorite was wood carving. WWII came when he was forcibly drafted into the German army, served as German tank commander on German/Russian front. Next captured at the Battle of Stalingrad, put into Russian prison camp. Part of his survival was whittling whatever scraps he could find, trading his little art carvings with Russian guards for food. He escaped prison, walked across Russia to a refugee camp where other members of his family were and met his future wife Maria. Willi continued artistic carvings, that caught the eye of an American general from Texas who bought his carvings and connected him to people in the U.S. who could be legal immigration sponsors. By boat this couple, Willi & Maria arrived in New York Harbor February 14, 1956, what a love story. "The Heeters" in Elkhart were their sponsors. Willi's life career was a highly skilled machine engineer, tool & die man. Locally, for many years he won art awards with the The Four Arts Club. He privately sold his detailed wood carvings, some pieces reportedly fetching $45,000. each.  His surviving widow Maria, lived to the vibrant age of 92 in their one and only family home along St. Joe River.

Their home provides a unique opportunity for you to view, inspect and buy Holzshuh's carvings that truly belong in a museum.

The Home is For Sale too, by direct private sale.
