Esther Forman Singer

Painter - Sculptor - Writer

Esther Forman Singer (October 14, 1923 -) is an American abstract painter, colorist, sculptor and writer.

Life and Career

Esther Forman Singer was born in the South Bronx, New York.  She was awarded a scholarship to The Arts Student League while in high school and took the subway from the Bronx to Manhattan five evenings a week.  She attended Thomas Jefferson University Nursing School in Philadelphia, PA.  In 1944 she enlisted in the army nurse corps and was stationed in Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.  She was promoted to 1stLieutenant and served in the South Pacific theater.  After the war, Mrs. Singer married Sidney Singer and settled in New Jersey where she continued her career as an artist.

Mrs. Singer explored realism and primitivism before she found her footing in abstract expressionism.  She studied with several first-generation abstractionists; Hans Hoffman and Jackson Pollack in the late 50’s.  Mrs.  Singer experimented with collagealongside Lee Krasner in the early 60’s.  She worked in multi-media eventually finding acrylics to be her forte.

Mrs. Singer began showing extensively around the tri-state area in gallery’s, museums and corporations. Mrs. Singer was represented by The Key Gallery in New York, NY, The Heilander Gallery in Palm Beach, Florida, Depescay Gallery, Paris, France, The Korby Gallery, New Jersey, and Art in The Embassies (Worldwide).

 Mrs. Singer began writing feature articles for American Artist Magazine in the late 60’s through the 80’s.  Some of her articles were interviews with Thomas Hart Bentonand Tully Filmus.  Mrs. Singer wrote a syndicated art column for the Worrell Press which included 12 newspapers, The Jersey Journal and The Newark Evening News and Suburban Art Magazine.

Public collections holding works by Esther Forman Singer include: The Whitney Museum of Art Permanent Collection, New York, NY, The Montclair Art Museum, Montclair, NJ, Morris Museum of Art, Morristown, NJ. The Library of Congress, NJ State Museum, Trenton, NJ,
