Listing Information
We are very honored to conduct an estate sale for the family of Dr. David DiChiera, who passed away in September of 2018. Founder and long-time General Director of Michigan Opera Theatre (MOT), Dr. DiChiera established one of the country's great opera companies here in Detroit in 1971. He lead the effort to purchase and restore both the Music Hall and the former Capitol Theater movie palace, which is now the Detroit Opera House and home of the Michigan Opera Theatre. Both buildings and DiChiera's tireless promotion of the arts served to anchor the city's cultural revival and downtown revitalization. DiChiera was an accomplished pianist, earned a doctorate in musicology from UCLA, and composed classical works including the opera Cyrano.

Dr. DiChiera's estate is filled with art, antiques, books and music that reflect his life as a composer and musician and his lifelong love and commitment to the arts. His beautiful 1920s home, situated on the Detroit Golf Course, was the site of countless parties for MOT productions and dinners for some of the world's most famous opera stars including Andrea Bocelli and Denise Graves, as well as many Detroit luminaries. This sale is a once in a lifetime opportunity to acquire something from Dr. DiChiera's truly remarkable life in music and a stunning home where the arts were nurtured and celebrated.

Sale Highlights include: paintings by Egill Jacobsen and Douglas Arthur Teed, prints by Peter Max, etchings by Louis Icart, art glass including Tiffany and Lalique, a wide selection of dinnerware, serving pieces, and stemware including Baccarat crystal, oriental rugs, a turn-of-the-century wrought iron patio set, and beautiful vintage and antique furnishings including many mahogany pieces and upholstered wingback couches and arm chairs.

A collection of letters and autographs from famous composers including Verdi, R. Vaughan Williams, and other composers, as well as Posters and items from the history of Michigan Opera Theatre, the arts in Detroit, and opera in the US are also part of this unforgettable sale, plus much more!

A complete list of contents and photographs will be added the week of the sale.
