Since 1839, the Suter name has stood for fine furniture of distinct quality.

Then, as today, we create elegant furniture your family will value for generations.

In the early 1800's, a young Daniel Suter left his rich and beautiful village of Kolliken, Switzerland for new opportunities in America. As a skilled Mennonite Cabinetmaker and carpenter, he followed the Great Wagon Road from Philadelphia, settling in Rockingham County, the heart of the Virginia's Shenandoah Valley.

A master craftsman, Daniel drew heavily from the popular English furniture found in the fine cabinet shops of Philadelphia, Williamsburg, Charleston and other early centers for the decorative arts. Yet he tempered the more complex designs to appeal to the simpler tastes of his German, Swiss, Scotch and Irish patrons in the Valley.

What really distinguishes us is the excellence in our craft. The Suter reputation for extraordinary workmanship has spread far beyond the Shenandoah Valley where we live and work. We're known for dovetailed drawers, hand-turned bedposts, and surfaces that are rubbed to the texture and gleam of satin. Such attention to detail is what makes our furniture unmatched in beauty, strength, and durability.

Created from cherry, mahogany and walnut to last a lifetime, our pieces are based on classic Chippendale, Queen Anne, Hepplewhite, and Sheraton designs that never go out of style.
