Artist's Statement
I feel, at various times, vulnerable, isolated, and exposed to grave dangers. My art is an effort to mitigate and dissipate these anxieties for myself and my audience. My recent sculpture, a series entitled SAFE SPACES AND RITUAL OBJECTS, embodies my concern about, and exploration of, man's current environment - social, cultural, and spiritual.

SAFE SPACES are modern versions of the caves, hogans, houses, and cathedrals where people have traditionally sought refuge. They are my "circles in the sand", within which I, and perhaps others, can find respite from the pressures of life, contact our inner selves, (A function largely ignored today), and perhaps, for a while, feel safe. In our alienation and isolation we have substituted recreation for re-creation and confused novelty with renewal. Our cosmology is failing us at precisely the moment when we most desperately need to confront the mystery and uncertainty of our lives and destinies. No artist can fill this spiritual void, but art, through the artist, can define spaces within that void. I seek to establish sanctuaries in which my viewers and I may feel centered, grounded and safe.
