This beautiful Chickering Square Grand Piano is the ultimate collector’s item! It’s a rare, antique piano of the pre-Civil War era (c. 1854), and is still in very good condition! It was appraised at $16,850, but actual purchase price can be negotiated. Per the appraiser, the dollar figure “is based on the age, condition, size, grade, and rarity of this instrument. This is the amount an insurance company would pay in case of loss.”
There has been a growing interest in square grand pianos for the past decade, and many collectors have considered these pianos an investment as they continue to appreciate in value. The appraiser has considered this piano to be “museum quality” and has stated that the piano has been “maintained and well cared for in a residential environment.”
Chickering is the oldest piano house in the United States and has received worldwide recognition, along with over 200 first medals and honors. One of the highest awards C. Frank Chickering received was the Imperial Cross of the Legion of Honor, given by Napoleon 111. “The significance of this high honor is the more appreciated because of its extreme rarity,” the appraiser stated, “very few such honors having been bestowed for accomplishments in the fine arts.”
The serial number is 15379, which means this piano was one of the last to be made in late 1854. Appraiser’s full description of the piano is available upon request.
