Note that all items are sold "AS IS", "WHERE IS,"in its condition at the time of sale without any warranties or guarantees, either expressed or implied INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO WARRANTIES OF TITLE, POSSESSION, QUIET ENJOYMENT, MERCHANTABILITY, OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE..
The Auctioneer reserves the right to bid on items in our auctions. We DO NOT bid on items on behalf of the seller. If we are bidding we are a paying customer just like any other.

The Bidder is responsible to inspect all items and age, condition, description and authenticity of all items prior to placing any bid. Ashby Auction Company seeks to disclose any condition issues material to a buying decision in our listings. Items with no declaration of condition must be previewed to determine condition. No item is guaranteed to be in perfect condition unless declared as such. Buyers should expect wear consistent with use and physically inspect items prior to bidding. Occasionally the full working condition of an item just simply isn't known or there are limits to our knowledge of the full functionality of an item. In these cases the buyer assumes the risk and should bid accordingly.

By placing a bid, buyers acknowledge that they have either inspected the item or property in question, or obtained a satisfactory condition report. Ashby Auction Company, LLC. recommends each item be examined thoroughly, including inspection by an independent appraiser or third party consultant, to determine condition and whether or not items have been repaired, restored, or damaged. Photos are provided for internet auction items but are a poor substitute for a physical inspection.

Your bid is contractually binding offer to purchase, and if your bid is the winning bid you are required to pay your full invoice.

Buyer's Premium: A buyer's premium equal to 10% of the gross sales price on each lot will be applied to the successful sale price for all bidders. This premium will be added to each and all lots sold in the auction.

REMOVAL AND FAILURE TO REMOVE - All purchases must be removed from the auction site without damaging any property and within the posted time frame allotted. Removal is at the Buyer's sole obligation, cost and risk, and only in a manner approved by the Auctioneers. All costs, responsibility and risk of such removal shall be borne by Buyer and, in every case; Buyer will use prudence and care in such removal. In the event the Buyer fails to pay the whole of the purchase price, fails to remove all purchased items and lots, or comply with any other condition herein contained or agreed to, the deposit shall be forfeited to the Auctioneer and the Auctioneer shall retain a possessory lien on all items or lots of the Buyer. The auction deposit and any payment made by the Buyer shall be retained by the Auctioneers for application against such deficiency. The Buyer agrees that the Auctioneer and/or Seller may retain all monies received pursuant to any such resale and apply that money toward any deficiency without further notice. The Auctioneers reserve the right to require proof of adequate insurance coverage from any Buyer of items or lots requiring dismantling, rigging, hot cutting, refrigerant certification, or any situation deemed necessary by the Auctioneers. Buyers agree to indemnify and save harmless both the Sellers and the Auctioneers, licensees, employees and agents, against any and all damage caused by the acts of the Buyers and/or their agents, employees, etcetera, in connection with the dismantling or removing of any item or lot. Buyers agree that any and all damages to the land or buildings, inside and outside, caused by them must be fixed, replaced or repaired to Auctioneer's and/or Seller's satisfaction, before they are permitted to leave with their purchases. If for any reason, the Buyers fail to remove any item or lot within the specified time, the item or lot will be deemed abandoned and the Auctioneer shall have the right but not the obligation, at their sole discretion to resell, discard or remove and store the items or lots at the Buyers' sole risk and expense, without any notice to Buyer and without waiving any rights that Auction Company or Seller may have against Buyer. The Buyers understand that they will lose any right, title or interest the Buyers may have acquired and the item or lot shall revert and repossess to the Seller or Auctioneer without any further notice to the Buyers. In addition, Buyers will be liable for any rent incurred, labor, storage, hauling, dump fees, etc, and damage suffered by the Auctioneers because of the Buyers failure to remove any item or lot. It is the Buyer's responsibility to secure all safety equipment to meet all applicable government safety standards in using or removing any items or lots purchased. Any fluids, spills, release into the environment, or any contamination whatsoever caused by the Buyer, their agents, employees, contractors, etc., during the auction or removal, are strictly and solely the Buyer's expense and liability to correct, remove and clean up. The Buyer takes full responsibility for compliance with applicable environmental laws and exercise all reasonable care to ensure that there is no release to the environment of any hazardous materials, wastes or substances as defined in applicable Federal, State and Local Statues, Laws, Regulations, Rules or Ordinances. The Buyer hereby agrees to indemnify and hold harmless the Auctioneer and Seller from any and all damages, claims or liabilities from any and all injuries to persons or property of any type whatsoever caused by the Buyer, their agents, employees or contractors during the viewing and/or removal, as to the use or operation while inspecting the items or lots, and as to the use or operation surrounding the removal of purchased items or lots, and as to any environmental situations created by the Buyer. No purchases may be removed from the auction site until said purchases are paid for in full.
Listing Information
About the collection: The Marro Collection includes works of art ranging from the whimsical to the breathtaking, including a great many artists with memorable style, talent for color and visual daring. Some are now deceased, John Ash and Aaron Birnbaum, for instance, but many more are still active, like Barbara Sparhawk, Valentin Popov and Dona Dalton. Great local artists are likewise represented, like Alan Rubin, Mark Miller and Elsa Rosenthal, Rosemary Gallick, Jennifer Duncan and Paul Zdepski. One of the artists whose work is well represented is Barbara Sparhawk. Barbara began painting at age 15 and she went on to portrait work, including that of William F. Buckley, worked in the Ashcan School style, and did bold and colorful pieces like the Carmel, California, scenes and the Pope of Greenwich Village homage in the collection. Valentin Popov is a Russian-born artist whose St. Batman series found particular favor in this collection. Popov's work from this period blended iconography with a comic book panache. John Ash was also a favorite and quintessentially English, a roamer who painted snowy scenes in Brighton as well as he painted boules in Paris. Ash was commissioned by the owners to capture Edward Hopper-like scenes but in an English setting. The results are quite clever. Aaron Birnbaum was a Ukrainian-born artist whose art reflects Eastern European origins and harmonizes perfectly with Lillian's forebears from Lithuania and Bohemia. The farm and early 20th century urban representations by Birnbaum will strike a responsive chord with anyone whose families came here around that time. Alan Rubin is a magnificent local artist whose imagination is equaled by his technical skill. Rubin's works in the collection include commissioned portraits of the Marro/Clancy dogs and of Marro's parents. His other works are pure Rubin and are unmistakable as a consequence. Rosemary Gallick is a Professor of Art and Art History at Northern Virginia Community College with a B.A. from the SUNY Stony Brook in Art, an M.F.A. from Pratt Institute in New York, and a Master's in Communication from Cornell University. She has published numerous articles and given various presentations on art and popular culture. Her art has been in numerous exhibitions in the United States and in this collection her pieces depict show business celebrities. Jennifer Duncan works primarily in acrylic on canvas, paper and board, mixing media to include collage, oil pastel and graphite. Using a bright color palette, her work is representational and whimsical, reflective of how she views the world around her. Paul Zdepski has nearly 30 years of corporate design, teaching and freelance experience, utilizing traditional and cutting edge creative tools. He is an award-winning Illustrator and sought after Designer and Instructor. Above all, his art is both creative and skillful. Several "in the manner of" pieces from Caravaggio and Rembrandt will catch your fancy as will Toots Shor-style caricatures of Nixon, Sinatra, Hope and FDR by Howard Allen. As if this wasn't enough, there are whirligigs, penguins, a Dona Dalton sphinx and other sculptures to satisfy the appetite for things Americana and things whimsical. I often find that the plants, animals and landscapes of my native Virginia home childhood work their way onto my canvases. My paintings begin as abstract work, guided by line, shape and composition. I allow myself to play, and find the paintings revealing themselves to me as I build and take away layers of color to reveal a rustic and painterly surface. I love to incorporate found objects, and I'm always on the hunt for antique postcards or letters that will add intrigue to my painting's story. I work primarily in acrylic on canvas, paper and board, mixing my media to include collage, oil pastel and graphite. The Bidder is responsible to inspect all items and age, condition, description and authenticity of all items prior to placing any bid. Ashby Auction Company seeks to disclose any condition issues material to a buying decision in our listings. Items with no declaration of condition must be previewed to determine condition. No item is guaranteed to be in perfect condition unless declared as such. Buyers should expect wear consistent with use and physically inspect items prior to bidding. Occasionally the full working condition of an item just simply isn't known or there are limits to our knowledge of the full functionality of an item. In these cases the buyer assumes the risk and should bid accordingly. By placing a bid, buyers acknowledge that they have either inspected the item or property in question, or obtained a satisfactory condition report. Ashby Auction Company, LLC. recommends each item be examined thoroughly, including inspection by an independent appraiser or third party consultant, to determine condition and whether or not items have been repaired, restored, or damaged. Photos are provided for internet auction items but are a poor substitute for a physical inspection. Your bid is contractually binding offer to purchase, and if your bid is the winning bid you are required to pay your full invoice. Buyer's Premium: A buyer's premium equal to 10% of the gross sales price on each lot will be applied to the successful sale price for all bidders. This premium will be added to each and all lots sold in the auction. REMOVAL AND FAILURE TO REMOVE - All purchases must be removed from the auction site without damaging any property and within the posted time frame allotted. Removal is at the Buyer's sole obligation, cost and risk, and only in a manner approved by the Auctioneers. All costs, responsibility and risk of such removal shall be borne by Buyer and, in every case; Buyer will use prudence and care in such removal. In the event the Buyer fails to pay the whole of the purchase price, fails to remove all purchased items and lots, or comply with any other condition herein contained or agreed to, the deposit shall be forfeited to the Auctioneer and the Auctioneer shall retain a possessory lien on all items or lots of the Buyer. The auction deposit and any payment made by the Buyer shall be retained by the Auctioneers for application against such deficiency. The Buyer agrees that the Auctioneer and/or Seller may retain all monies received pursuant to any such resale and apply that money toward any deficiency without further notice. The Auctioneers reserve the right to require proof of adequate insurance coverage from any Buyer of items or lots requiring dismantling, rigging, hot cutting, refrigerant certification, or any situation deemed necessary by the Auctioneers. Buyers agree to indemnify and save harmless both the Sellers and the Auctioneers, licensees, employees and agents, against any and all damage caused by the acts of the Buyers and/or their agents, employees, etcetera, in connection with the dismantling or removing of any item or lot. Buyers agree that any and all damages to the land or buildings, inside and outside, caused by them must be fixed, replaced or repaired to Auctioneer's and/or Seller's satisfaction, before they are permitted to leave with their purchases. If for any reason, the Buyers fail to remove any item or lot within the specified time, the item or lot will be deemed abandoned and the Auctioneer shall have the right but not the obligation, at their sole discretion to resell, discard or remove and store the items or lots at the Buyers' sole risk and expense, without any notice to Buyer and without waiving any rights that Auction Company or Seller may have against Buyer. The Buyers understand that they will lose any right, title or interest the Buyers may have acquired and the item or lot shall revert and repossess to the Seller or Auctioneer without any further notice to the Buyers. In addition, Buyers will be liable for any rent incurred, labor, storage, hauling, dump fees, etc, and damage suffered by the Auctioneers because of the Buyers failure to remove any item or lot. It is the Buyer's responsibility to secure all safety equipment to meet all applicable government safety standards in using or removing any items or lots purchased. Any fluids, spills, release into the environment, or any contamination whatsoever caused by the Buyer, their agents, employees, contractors, etc., during the auction or removal, are strictly and solely the Buyer's expense and liability to correct, remove and clean up. The Buyer takes full responsibility for compliance with applicable environmental laws and exercise all reasonable care to ensure that there is no release to the environment of any hazardous materials, wastes or substances as defined in applicable Federal, State and Local Statues, Laws, Regulations, Rules or Ordinances. The Buyer hereby agrees to indemnify and hold harmless the Auctioneer and Seller from any and all damages, claims or liabilities from any and all injuries to persons or property of any type whatsoever caused by the Buyer, their agents, employees or contractors during the viewing and/or removal, as to the use or operation while inspecting the items or lots, and as to the use or operation surrounding the removal of purchased items or lots, and as to any environmental situations created by the Buyer. No purchases may be removed from the auction site until said purchases are paid for in full.
Listing Details
About the collection: The Marro Collection includes works of art ranging from the whimsical to the breathtaking, including a great many artists with memorable style, talent for color and visual daring. Some are now deceased, John Ash and Aaron Birnbaum, for instance, but many more are still active, like Barbara Sparhawk, Valentin Popov and Dona Dalton. Great local artists are likewise represented, like Alan Rubin, Mark Miller and Elsa Rosenthal, Rosemary Gallick, Jennifer Duncan and Paul Zdepski. One of the artists whose work is well represented is Barbara Sparhawk. Barbara began painting at age 15 and she went on to portrait work, including that of William F. Buckley, worked in the Ashcan School style, and did bold and colorful pieces like the Carmel, California, scenes and the Pope of Greenwich Village homage in the collection. Valentin Popov is a Russian-born artist whose St. Batman series found particular favor in this collection. Popov's work from this period blended iconography with a comic book panache. John Ash was also a favorite and quintessentially English, a roamer who painted snowy scenes in Brighton as well as he painted boules in Paris. Ash was commissioned by the owners to capture Edward Hopper-like scenes but in an English setting. The results are quite clever. Aaron Birnbaum was a Ukrainian-born artist whose art reflects Eastern European origins and harmonizes perfectly with Lillian's forebears from Lithuania and Bohemia. The farm and early 20th century urban representations by Birnbaum will strike a responsive chord with anyone whose families came here around that time. Alan Rubin is a magnificent local artist whose imagination is equaled by his technical skill. Rubin's works in the collection include commissioned portraits of the Marro/Clancy dogs and of Marro's parents. His other works are pure Rubin and are unmistakable as a consequence. Rosemary Gallick is a Professor of Art and Art History at Northern Virginia Community College with a B.A. from the SUNY Stony Brook in Art, an M.F.A. from Pratt Institute in New York, and a Master's in Communication from Cornell University. She has published numerous articles and given various presentations on art and popular culture. Her art has been in numerous exhibitions in the United States and in this collection her pieces depict show business celebrities. Jennifer Duncan works primarily in acrylic on canvas, paper and board, mixing media to include collage, oil pastel and graphite. Using a bright color palette, her work is representational and whimsical, reflective of how she views the world around her. Paul Zdepski has nearly 30 years of corporate design, teaching and freelance experience, utilizing traditional and cutting edge creative tools. He is an award-winning Illustrator and sought after Designer and Instructor. Above all, his art is both creative and skillful. Several "in the manner of" pieces from Caravaggio and Rembrandt will catch your fancy as will Toots Shor-style caricatures of Nixon, Sinatra, Hope and FDR by Howard Allen. As if this wasn't enough, there are whirligigs, penguins, a Dona Dalton sphinx and other sculptures to satisfy the appetite for things Americana and things whimsical. I often find that the plants, animals and landscapes of my native Virginia home childhood work their way onto my canvases. My paintings begin as abstract work, guided by line, shape and composition. I allow myself to play, and find the paintings revealing themselves to me as I build and take away layers of color to reveal a rustic and painterly surface. I love to incorporate found objects, and I'm always on the hunt for antique postcards or letters that will add intrigue to my painting's story. I work primarily in acrylic on canvas, paper and board, mixing my media to include collage, oil pastel and graphite. Note that all items are sold "AS IS", "WHERE IS,"in its condition at the time of sale without any warranties or guarantees, either expressed or implied INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO WARRANTIES OF TITLE, POSSESSION, QUIET ENJOYMENT, MERCHANTABILITY, OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE.. The Auctioneer reserves the right to bid on items in our auctions. We DO NOT bid on items on behalf of the seller. If we are bidding we are a paying customer just like any other. The Bidder is responsible to inspect all items and age, condition, description and authenticity of all items prior to placing any bid. Ashby Auction Company seeks to disclose any condition issues material to a buying decision in our listings. Items with no declaration of condition must be previewed to determine condition. No item is guaranteed to be in perfect condition unless declared as such. Buyers should expect wear consistent with use and physically inspect items prior to bidding. Occasionally the full working condition of an item just simply isn't known or there are limits to our knowledge of the full functionality of an item. In these cases the buyer assumes the risk and should bid accordingly. By placing a bid, buyers acknowledge that they have either inspected the item or property in question, or obtained a satisfactory condition report. Ashby Auction Company, LLC. recommends each item be examined thoroughly, including inspection by an independent appraiser or third party consultant, to determine condition and whether or not items have been repaired, restored, or damaged. Photos are provided for internet auction items but are a poor substitute for a physical inspection. Your bid is contractually binding offer to purchase, and if your bid is the winning bid you are required to pay your full invoice. Buyer's Premium: A buyer's premium equal to 10% of the gross sales price on each lot will be applied to the successful sale price for all bidders. This premium will be added to each and all lots sold in the auction. REMOVAL AND FAILURE TO REMOVE - All purchases must be removed from the auction site without damaging any property and within the posted time frame allotted. Removal is at the Buyer's sole obligation, cost and risk, and only in a manner approved by the Auctioneers. All costs, responsibility and risk of such removal shall be borne by Buyer and, in every case; Buyer will use prudence and care in such removal. In the event the Buyer fails to pay the whole of the purchase price, fails to remove all purchased items and lots, or comply with any other condition herein contained or agreed to, the deposit shall be forfeited to the Auctioneer and the Auctioneer shall retain a possessory lien on all items or lots of the Buyer. The auction deposit and any payment made by the Buyer shall be retained by the Auctioneers for application against such deficiency. The Buyer agrees that the Auctioneer and/or Seller may retain all monies received pursuant to any such resale and apply that money toward any deficiency without further notice. The Auctioneers reserve the right to require proof of adequate insurance coverage from any Buyer of items or lots requiring dismantling, rigging, hot cutting, refrigerant certification, or any situation deemed necessary by the Auctioneers. Buyers agree to indemnify and save harmless both the Sellers and the Auctioneers, licensees, employees and agents, against any and all damage caused by the acts of the Buyers and/or their agents, employees, etcetera, in connection with the dismantling or removing of any item or lot. Buyers agree that any and all damages to the land or buildings, inside and outside, caused by them must be fixed, replaced or repaired to Auctioneer's and/or Seller's satisfaction, before they are permitted to leave with their purchases. If for any reason, the Buyers fail to remove any item or lot within the specified time, the item or lot will be deemed abandoned and the Auctioneer shall have the right but not the obligation, at their sole discretion to resell, discard or remove and store the items or lots at the Buyers' sole risk and expense, without any notice to Buyer and without waiving any rights that Auction Company or Seller may have against Buyer. The Buyers understand that they will lose any right, title or interest the Buyers may have acquired and the item or lot shall revert and repossess to the Seller or Auctioneer without any further notice to the Buyers. In addition, Buyers will be liable for any rent incurred, labor, storage, hauling, dump fees, etc, and damage suffered by the Auctioneers because of the Buyers failure to remove any item or lot. It is the Buyer's responsibility to secure all safety equipment to meet all applicable government safety standards in using or removing any items or lots purchased. Any fluids, spills, release into the environment, or any contamination whatsoever caused by the Buyer, their agents, employees, contractors, etc., during the auction or removal, are strictly and solely the Buyer's expense and liability to correct, remove and clean up. The Buyer takes full responsibility for compliance with applicable environmental laws and exercise all reasonable care to ensure that there is no release to the environment of any hazardous materials, wastes or substances as defined in applicable Federal, State and Local Statues, Laws, Regulations, Rules or Ordinances. The Buyer hereby agrees to indemnify and hold harmless the Auctioneer and Seller from any and all damages, claims or liabilities from any and all injuries to persons or property of any type whatsoever caused by the Buyer, their agents, employees or contractors during the viewing and/or removal, as to the use or operation while inspecting the items or lots, and as to the use or operation surrounding the removal of purchased items or lots, and as to any environmental situations created by the Buyer. No purchases may be removed from the auction site until said purchases are paid for in full.
About the collection: The Marro Collection includes works of art ranging from the whimsical to the breathtaking, including a great many artists with memorable style, talent for color and visual daring. Some are now deceased, John Ash and Aaron Birnbaum, for instance, but many more are still active, like Barbara Sparhawk, Valentin Popov and Dona Dalton. Great local artists are likewise represented, like Alan Rubin, Mark Miller and Elsa Rosenthal, Rosemary Gallick, Jennifer Duncan and Paul Zdepski. One of the artists whose work is well represented is Barbara Sparhawk. Barbara began painting at age 15 and she went on to portrait work, including that of William F. Buckley, worked in the Ashcan School style, and did bold and colorful pieces like the Carmel, California, scenes and the Pope of Greenwich Village homage in the collection. Valentin Popov is a Russian-born artist whose St. Batman series found particular favor in this collection. Popov's work from this period blended iconography with a comic book panache. John Ash was also a favorite and quintessentially English, a roamer who painted snowy scenes in Brighton as well as he painted boules in Paris. Ash was commissioned by the owners to capture Edward Hopper-like scenes but in an English setting. The results are quite clever. Aaron Birnbaum was a Ukrainian-born artist whose art reflects Eastern European origins and harmonizes perfectly with Lillian's forebears from Lithuania and Bohemia. The farm and early 20th century urban representations by Birnbaum will strike a responsive chord with anyone whose families came here around that time. Alan Rubin is a magnificent local artist whose imagination is equaled by his technical skill. Rubin's works in the collection include commissioned portraits of the Marro/Clancy dogs and of Marro's parents. His other works are pure Rubin and are unmistakable as a consequence. Rosemary Gallick is a Professor of Art and Art History at Northern Virginia Community College with a B.A. from the SUNY Stony Brook in Art, an M.F.A. from Pratt Institute in New York, and a Master's in Communication from Cornell University. She has published numerous articles and given various presentations on art and popular culture. Her art has been in numerous exhibitions in the United States and in this collection her pieces depict show business celebrities. Jennifer Duncan works primarily in acrylic on canvas, paper and board, mixing media to include collage, oil pastel and graphite. Using a bright color palette, her work is representational and whimsical, reflective of how she views the world around her. Paul Zdepski has nearly 30 years of corporate design, teaching and freelance experience, utilizing traditional and cutting edge creative tools. He is an award-winning Illustrator and sought after Designer and Instructor. Above all, his art is both creative and skillful. Several "in the manner of" pieces from Caravaggio and Rembrandt will catch your fancy as will Toots Shor-style caricatures of Nixon, Sinatra, Hope and FDR by Howard Allen. As if this wasn't enough, there are whirligigs, penguins, a Dona Dalton sphinx and other sculptures to satisfy the appetite for things Americana and things whimsical. I often find that the plants, animals and landscapes of my native Virginia home childhood work their way onto my canvases. My paintings begin as abstract work, guided by line, shape and composition. I allow myself to play, and find the paintings revealing themselves to me as I build and take away layers of color to reveal a rustic and painterly surface. I love to incorporate found objects, and I'm always on the hunt for antique postcards or letters that will add intrigue to my painting's story. I work primarily in acrylic on canvas, paper and board, mixing my media to include collage, oil pastel and graphite.
