Listing Terms and Conditions
This is an online only auction with bidding through Hibid. Bidding will end in numerical order with 3 items ending every minute. If there is bidding activity in the last 2 minutes, the end time will be extended 2 minutes until there is no further bidding for 2 minutes. Extending the end time for an item does not change the end time of the following item, so there may be several lots ending simultaneously. You may bid anytime up until the ending time for each item. Click the link above for the auction catalog and to register to bid.

TERMS: You will have to register to bid in this auction. The registration process with Hibid is one-time. You will not have to go through the registration process for future auctions. If you do not wish to register with your credit card, please contact our office and we will assist you with options. If you have difficulty with registering or if you are unsure about the process, or if you just want help bidding, call our office and we will be glad to help you with it. Online bidders will pay a buyer's premium of 10%.

PAYMENT AND SHIPPING: We accept cash, credit cards, PayPal, and checks. Local buyers can use credit cards, cash, or personal check. Nothing will be removed from the auction site until it is paid for. WE WILL GLADLY SHIP ANY ITEM YOU WANT! If you want us to ship your items, the cost of packing and shipping will be added to your total and a new invoice will be sent to you showing the total due. We ship in-house with reasonable handling charges. Payment is expected within 48 hours of invoice for shipped items. If you wish to make payment arrangements other than credit card for shipped orders, we ask that you contact Black and Gold Auctions at least 24 hours before the auction. We will be happy to work with you in that way.

IMPORTANT CHANGES EFFECTIVE FEBRUARY 27, 2019: All unpaid invoices remaining at 12:00 Noon on Saturday following the auction end will be assessed a $10 storage fee and the total invoice amount will be charged to the credit card on file with HiBid. If the card is declined, bidding privileges will be immediately suspended until the past due amount is paid in full. If the invoice remains unpaid after 7 days, items will be forfeited and bidding privileges will be permanently revoked. If the invoice is paid this way, purchased items will be stored for a maximum of 7 days. If purchased items are not picked up within 7 days, additional storage fees of $2 per item per day will accrue and bidding privileges will be suspended until items are removed from our facility. If items are not removed at the end of 30 days, they will be forfeited and bidding privileges will be permanently revoked.
We have always tried to be understanding of special circumstances which may require a different pickup time. We will continue to try to work with special circumstances that you may face, but we must be notified in advance and items must be paid for before we can set an alternate pickup time.

1
1803 Draped Bust half cent, G/VG
Judging strictly by wear, this coin grades Good+. But if you look at the strike, it's way above average with full, legible lettering which is indicative of giving this coin a VG grade. Take a look and you decide--let's just say it is a nice example f...

2
1797 Draped Bust large cent, VG details
Surfaces on both sides are pitted, which is common on these old coppers. This coin has the Reverse of 1797, with stems at bow. Scarce in any grade. Interesting die cud in field to right of bust.

3
1798 Draped Bust large cent, AG
Identifiable by date, but well worn, so we did not check for varieties. Scarce coin.

4
1800 Draped Bust large cent, overdate?
This coin grades VG for details and has an interesting die cud through the IB of Liberty. What is more fascinating is that we think this is possibly an overdate variety with an 80 over 79. The loop of the 9 can be seen under the first O, mostly by th...

5
1801 Draped Bust large cent, AG
Tape residue across bust, 2-3 gouges on both sides of coin.

6
1802 Draped Bust large cent, AG

8
1805 Draped Bust large cent, Fair
Identifiable by date, otherwise very well worn.

9

Identifiable by date, but heavily worn and with an old cleaning.

10

11
1808 Classic Head large cent, AG/G
The entire series of Classic Head large cents was struck on inferior planchets and lack sharpness and quality. The metallic impurities in the copper cause uneven wear, which is very plainly seen on this coin. Half the coin would grade VG, the other h...

12
1810 10 over 09 Classic Head large cent
Heavily circulated coin that will grade no better than Good. But, it is an overdate, with the 0 under the second 1 clearly visible even in this low grade. Vestiges of the 9 can be seen at the bottom of the 0.

13
1811 Classic Head large cent, Fair
Dated barely discernible, but enough to call it an 1811. Unable to determine variety.

14
1812 Classic Head large cent, Good
Small date variety. Light porosity on surfaces.

15
1813 Classic Head large cent, damaged
Large gouge at date and coin is bowed.

16
1814 Classic Head large cent, Good
Crosslet 4 variety. One gouge on both the obverse and reverse.

22

Small 8, small stars, medium letters variety.

37
1836 Coronet Head large cent, Good
Small 8, small stars, medium letters variety.

38
1837 Coronet Head large cent, Cleaned
VG details, but harshly cleaned and on the reverse there is a gouge that obscures the O in ONE.

39
1838 Coronet Head large cent, XF
Well detailed coin. There is some surface grime and a couple tiny spots of verdigris, but overall this coin is sharp.

42
1841 Coronet Head large cent, VF+ details
This coin has been cleaned in the past and the color is not natural, although it is toning back. This is the small date variety.

43
1842 Coronet Head large cent, VF details
This coin has been improperly cleaned. Large date variety.

44
1843 Coronet Head large cent, Fine+
Petite head, large letters variety.

56
1855 Coronet Head large cent, XF details
Improperly cleaned, but starting to tone back.

59
1857 Flying Eagle cent, PCGS AU Details
PCGS notes cleaned. Still, for all the hundreds of these we see in low grades, this is one pretty piece.

60
1858 Flying Eagle cent, PCGS XF Detail
Small letter variety. PCGS notes: "surfaces smoothed". We really like the looks of this coin and do not necessarily agree with their assessment. Again, given how many of these we see that are low, low grade, this is a very nice coin.

61
1858 Flying Eagle cent, PCGS XF Details
This is the large letter variety. PCGS notes: "cleaned". Once more, we have to say, for our money this is one fine looking coin.

63
1860 copper-nickel Indian Head cent, PCGS AU
Details. PCGS notes: "surfaces smoothed". We love the look of this coin. This is the rounded bust variety.

64
1861 copper-nickel Indian Head cent, PCGS AU
Details. PCGS notes: "surfaces smoothed". Here is another super looking coin.

65
1862 copper-nickel Indian Head cent, AU
Very well detailed coin, with only minor indications of wear or use.

67
1864 copper-nickel Indian Head cent, VF
Surfaces appear slightly granular.

68
1864 Bronze Indian Head cent, AU details
A fantastic coin for detail. Unfortunately, there are shallow scratches above the upper part of the feathers. This coin has precious little wear--we would call it a high AU without the damage. If you can live with the flaws, it shows very well.

70
1865 Indian Head cent, VF+
These early Indian cents are tough as nails in grades VF and above. This is the plain 5 variety.

71
1866 Indian Head cent, VF+
Better date early Indian Head cent. Close to XF.

72
1867 Indian Head cent, Fine
Another scarce early Indian Head cent.

73
1868 Indian Head cent, XF+
Another scarce, early Indian cent in a very desirable grade.

74
Scarce 1869 Indian Head cent, Good
Light scratch through headdress.

75
1870 Indian Head cent, Fine
Low mintage coin and another tough early Indian cent.

76
1871 Indian Head cent, Good
Scarce. This coin has been cleaned in the past.

77
1872 Indian Head cent, VF details
Very scarce coin that has nice remaining details. There is a large gouge on the shield on the reverse and there is faint evidence of an old cleaning which has mostly toned back.

79
1874 Indian Head cent, XF
Another sought after mid-70's Indian cent.

80
1875 Indian Head cent, VF
Better date, light porosity to surfaces.

81
1876 Indian Head cent, Good+
Very close to making VG.

82
1877 Indian Head cent, PCGS XF Details
The key date regular issue Indian Head cent! How often do you see these in XF? We confess to being a bit nettled by the grade PCGS assigned, with the note about "rim damage". Between 1:00 and 2:00 on the rim there is an impact mark, which was the imp...

83
1878 Indian Head cent, VG
Scarce date and a problem-free circulated coin.

84
1879 Indian Head cent, XF+
Very attractive coin with lovely surfaces.

86
1881 & 82 Indian Head cents, VF & XF
The 1882 is a strong XF.

88
1885 & 86 Indian Head cents, nice VF's
The 1886 has a couple small odd-colored spots on the obverse, but both coins are VF+ and close to XFs.

89
1887 & 88 Indian Head cents, VF+ & XF
The 1888 has a line along the cheekbone--it really does not look like a scratch...more like a shallow furrow.

91
1891 Indian Head cent, AU details
Super sharp coin, with a few tiny, round "digs" around date and around STA in STATES. Color indicates it may have been lightly cleaned at one time, but has toned back pretty well.

93
1894 & 95 Indian Head cents, VFs
The 1894 is VF+. The 1895 exhibits surface granularity on obverse.

95
1898 & 99 Indian Head cents, both AU
Two very nice coins, with the 1898 likely an AU+

96
1900 Indian Head cent, XF details
At first glance, appears uncirculated, but there is light wear on the coin and it has been cleaned in the past, as the luster is not original.

97
1901 Indian Head cent, AU+ details
A coin that is close to uncirculated, but has been cleaned, as the luster/color is not original.

98
1902 & 03 Indian Head cents, AU details
Both high grade coins, but both have been cleaned in the past. More subtle on the 1902, but we consider the color questionable on both coins.

99
1904 & 05 Indian Head cents, XF & AU
The 1905 is a very pretty coin on the obverse, but the reverse is questionable enough in color that we are calling this coin cleaned.

100
1906 & 08 Indian Head cents, XF & AU
Here again, the color on the 1908 is just not right, so it is our opinion that it has been cleaned.

101
1907 Indian Head cent, AU+ details
A coin that is close to being uncirculated, but the color indicates that it has been cleaned.

102
Key Date 1908-S Indian Head cent, VF details
We are not the least bothered by the striations on the coin--anyone who looks at early copper Indian cents or Lincolns will be familiar with this effect, which is a result of variations in the metallic content of the coin. However, the entire coin ha...

103
1909 Indian Head cent, Fine details
Granular surfaces and was cleaned at some point in the past.

104
Key Date 1909-S Indian Head cent, PCGS VF35
Very nice condition and a cut above the well worn examples that usually turn up of this date.

105
1909 VDB Lincoln cent, AU+
Very nice coin with precious little indication of use. Goodly amount of underlying mint luster.

106
Key Date! 1909-S VDB Lincoln cent, PCGS VF30
Not much to add--it's the key, it's genuine and it's a decent grade. Bid now!

107
1909 Lincoln cent, High AU/Unc
Look at this coin. Virtually full mint bloom, plus a pleasing red-brown color. We may see just a hint of rub on the cheekbone, but also think that many would call this uncirculated. What say you?

108
Key Date 1909-S Lincoln cent, Fine
Very low mintage coin, always in demand and highly sought after.

110
1911-D Lincoln cent, XF details
Hard to find these early mintmarked teen Lincolns in anything but heavily worn condition. This one is a nice XF for details, but the color makes us think it was lightly cleaned at one time. We suggest careful examination of this lot to satisfy yourse...

111
Key Date 1914-D Lincoln cent, VG
Very scarce coin that is absolutely essential to completing a Lincoln cent collection. We are certain that is genuine and stand behind our statement.

112
1914-S Lincoln cent, VG/F, Semi-Key Date
Mintmarked teen Lincolns are eagerly sought after.

113
1922-D Lincoln cent, PCGS F15, Weak D
Weak D!?! We guess, because we do not see any D at all. Scarce coin.

114
1924-D Lincoln cent, Fine+, Semi-Key Date
Very low mintage and very high demand for decent examples of this date. This coin comes close to grading VF.

115
1931-S Lincoln cent, XF, Semi-Key date!
Great looking example of this semi-key date.

116
Deluxe Lincoln 1909-40 folder, nearly full
Worth the time to examine and research this lot. We took eleven coins out to sell individually, but left everything else including virtually all of the mintmarked teen Lincolns. Better still, there are no culls or damaged coins in this lot--though so...

Scarce date, with a mintage of only 260,000.

This vintage coin board is collectible in its own right, with a patent number that dates it to 1929. Included are seven well circulated Shield nickels: 1866, 1867 with rays, 1867 no rays, 1868, 1869, 1874 and 1882.

129
1913 Type 1 Buffalo nickel, Fine+
For details, this coin presents as VF, but the horn is not completely full, so we stopped just short of calling this VF.

132
1913-D Type 2 Buffalo nickel, VF
A scarce coin that is one of the semi-key dates in this series. Very well detailed coin.

133
1913-S Type 1 Buffalo nickel, VG
Another scarce, early Buffalo nickel. Anyone who collects Buffalo nickels knows that a good part of the series was weakly struck, with particular dates being plagued with very weak and/or uneven strikes--this is one of those dates.

134
Scarce 1913-S Type 2 Buffalo nickel, Fine
One of the key dates in this series and also one of the coins that is plagued by weak strikes. This one is no exception, but despite that, this is a nice Fine example.

136
1914-D Buffalo nickel, Fine
A semi-key date in this series.

138
1915 & 1915-D Buffalo nickel, both VG
The 1915-D is a better date in the series.

141
1916-D Buffalo nickel, VF
Better date, with nice details--point of the horn does not show, but this is a VF coin.`

142
1917 & 17-D Buffalo nickels, VG & Good+
The 1917-D is another tough coin to find.

143
1917-S Buffalo nickel, nice VF
Semi-key date, with a strong, full horn.

144
1918 & 18-S Buffalo nickels, both Fine
The 1918-S is yet another low mintage coin.

145

146
1919 & 19-D Buffalo nickels, both Fine
The 1919-D has Fine details, but looks like it has been cleaned and there are some surface flaws on the reverse.

147
1919-S Buffalo nickel, Fine
Flatly struck, but a better date.

149
1921 Buffalo nickel, VF/XF
Soft strike, but little true wear on this coin.

150
Scarce 1921-S Buffalo nickel, Fine
One of the key dates in the series. Wretched strike, typical for this year, but a very desirable coin nonetheless.

153
Scarce 1924-S Buffalo nickel, Good
Very tough to find in any grade. Semi-key date with a mintage of just over 1.4 million.

154
1925-D & 25-S Buffalo nickels, Fine & VG
In our experience the most difficult year and mintmarks to find with any kind of a decent strike. We have seen mint state examples lacking most details. That said, these aren't too bad for the date.

155
1926-D & 26-S Buffalo nickels, Good
Both are low mintage coins, particularly the 1926-S. Both are well circulated examples.

156
Scarce 1931-S Buffalo nickel, Fine
Only 1.2 million minted.

159
1892 & 92-O Barber dime, Good/Good+

The 1893 has some dark areas on both sides.

Mintage of only 720,000. Weak strike on left side of coin.

165
RARE 1895-O Barber dime, AG
Key date to the series (we consider the 1894-S to be non-collectible with only two dozen made). This coin is well worn, but date and mintmark are both identifiable.

166
1895 & 95-S Barber dimes, as found
Both scarce coins and both have issues. The 1895 has near Fine details, but has obverse scratches and a significant impact mark. The 1895-S has several light scratches across the obverse.

Listing Details
This is the first of 3 auctions from this collection that was assembled in the 1950's through the 1980's. This fresh to the market collection includes some rare and high grade coins including every Morgan and Carson City dollar. A great opportunity to improve your collection.

Verdigris seen on each side. This is a stemless wreath variety.

7
1803 Draped Bust large cent, Good
Well circulated coin; this is the small date, large fraction variety.

8
1805 Draped Bust large cent, Fair
Identifiable by date, otherwise very well worn.

9
1806 Draped Bust large cent, Fair

22
Scarce 1821 Coronet Head large cent, Good
Very low mintage of only 389,000. Tough date.

24

29
1828 Coronet Head large cent, VF
Large narrow date variety.

30

31

32
1831 Classic Head large cent, VG
Medium letter variety.

33

35
1834 Coronet Head large cent, Good, Cleaned
Small 8, large stars, medium letter variety.

36
1835 Coronet Head large cent, VG
Small 8, small stars, medium letters variety.

37
1836 Coronet Head large cent, Good
Small 8, small stars, medium letters variety.

38
1837 Coronet Head large cent, Cleaned
VG details, but harshly cleaned and on the reverse there is a gouge that obscures the O in ONE.

39
1838 Coronet Head large cent, XF
Well detailed coin. There is some surface grime and a couple tiny spots of verdigris, but overall this coin is sharp.

42
1841 Coronet Head large cent, VF+ details
This coin has been cleaned in the past and the color is not natural, although it is toning back. This is the small date variety.

43
1842 Coronet Head large cent, VF details
This coin has been improperly cleaned. Large date variety.

44
1843 Coronet Head large cent, Fine+
Petite head, large letters variety.

45

46
1845 Coronet Head large cent, VF details
Improperly cleaned in the past.

47
1846 Coronet Head large cent, VF
Medium date variety. Two light scratches on face.

49
1848 Coronet Head large cent, VF details
Improperly cleaned in the past, along with verdigris in the devices on both sides.

50
1849 Coronet Head large cent, VF details
Improperly cleaned in the past, with verdigris on both sides.

51
1850 Coronet Head large cent, VF+
Close to XF details. May have been lightly cleaned at some point, but is retoning nicely.

52
1851 Coronet Head large cent, VF details
Improperly cleaned and beset with numerous tiny scratches on obverse.

53
1852 Coronet Head large cent, VF+
Well detailed coin that approaches the XF level.

54
1853 Coronet Head large cent, XF details
Improperly cleaned in the past. Verdigris present on both obverse and reverse.

55
1854 Coronet Head large cent, VF+ details
Improperly cleaned in the past, small spots of verdigris on both sides.

120
1867 Two cent piece, Good
Cleaned, dark, with some surface crud.

121
1867 Two Cent piece, VG details
Small gouge on ribbon on obverse, numerous tiny scratches in center of reverse.

124
1870 Two Cent piece, Good, Scarce
This late date two cent piece has a mintage of only 861,250.

125
1874 Three Cent Nickel, VF
Low mintage of only 790,000.

126
1852-O Seated Liberty half dime, Good
Scarce date, with a mintage of only 260,000.

128
Vintage coin board with 7 Shield nickels

60
1858 Flying Eagle cent, PCGS XF Detail
Small letter variety. PCGS notes: "surfaces smoothed". We really like the looks of this coin and do not necessarily agree with their assessment. Again, given how many of these we see that are low, low grade, this is a very nice coin.

90

91
1891 Indian Head cent, AU details
Super sharp coin, with a few tiny, round "digs" around date and around STA in STATES. Color indicates it may have been lightly cleaned at one time, but has toned back pretty well.

92

93
1894 & 95 Indian Head cents, VFs
The 1894 is VF+. The 1895 exhibits surface granularity on obverse.

94

109

118

119

This late date two cent piece has a mintage of only 861,250.

125

Low mintage of only 790,000.

126
1852-O Seated Liberty half dime, Good
Scarce date, with a mintage of only 260,000.

127

128
Vintage coin board with 7 Shield nickels
This vintage coin board is collectible in its own right, with a patent number that dates it to 1929. Included are seven well circulated Shield nickels: 1866, 1867 with rays, 1867 no rays, 1868, 1869, 1874 and 1882.

129
1913 Type 1 Buffalo nickel, Fine+
For details, this coin presents as VF, but the horn is not completely full, so we stopped just short of calling this VF.

130

131

135

136
1914-D Buffalo nickel, Fine
A semi-key date in this series.

137

138
1915 & 1915-D Buffalo nickel, both VG
The 1915-D is a better date in the series.

139

140

141
1916-D Buffalo nickel, VF
Better date, with nice details--point of the horn does not show, but this is a VF coin.`

142
1917 & 17-D Buffalo nickels, VG & Good+
The 1917-D is another tough coin to find.

143
1917-S Buffalo nickel, nice VF
Semi-key date, with a strong, full horn.

144
1918 & 18-S Buffalo nickels, both Fine
The 1918-S is yet another low mintage coin.

145

146
1919 & 19-D Buffalo nickels, both Fine
The 1919-D has Fine details, but looks like it has been cleaned and there are some surface flaws on the reverse.

147
1919-S Buffalo nickel, Fine
Flatly struck, but a better date.

148

149
1921 Buffalo nickel, VF/XF
Soft strike, but little true wear on this coin.

150
Scarce 1921-S Buffalo nickel, Fine
One of the key dates in the series. Wretched strike, typical for this year, but a very desirable coin nonetheless.

151

152

157

158

159

Mintage of only 720,000. Weak strike on left side of coin.

165
RARE 1895-O Barber dime, AG
Key date to the series (we consider the 1894-S to be non-collectible with only two dozen made). This coin is well worn, but date and mintmark are both identifiable.

166
1895 & 95-S Barber dimes, as found
Both scarce coins and both have issues. The 1895 has near Fine details, but has obverse scratches and a significant impact mark. The 1895-S has several light scratches across the obverse.
