Family history: Father owned one of the first Dr Pepper bottling franchises located in Troy, AL during the 40s. One of the memorable moments involved making the syrup. The father would place a ladder against the tall mixing vat and hand the 5 lb rationed bag of sugar to the mother who then passed it to the daughter to pour into the vat. Normally the sugar would come in 100 lb bags but they were rationed because of the war to 5 lbs. The extended family would contribute their 5 lbs ration of sugar to keep the business running. The daughter was a Maverick. Setting her sights higher than was typical for that era, she decided she didn't want to have a typing job so majored in Accounting and was the only girl in the class. Selling the bottling plant the dad went to the road selling needed items to the many other soft drink bottlers. One day while on the road selling he called his daughter and said that he did not feel well. She caught a flight from Orlando to Alabama to drive him home and a doctor determined that he had cancer. In the following year he was too sick to go on the road. At that time women were not hired as a Salesman but she continued selling her Dad’s accounts as the bottlers were a tight family and said nothing to the company. In her 3rd year she sold more than anyone, even Internationally. At the annual Private Dinner with other salesmen and company owners, she was the only female at the table. The Owner asked her to stand and told her that she belonged in the kitchen. She stated that “If you will pay me the same amount I will be happy to do that.” She continued to outsell everyone. Before her father passed, she was able to tell him that she outsold his nemesis, another salesman in the company always outdoing him month after month. A Coke bottler located in the Virgin Islands wanted t-shirts so she ask her son, who was out of school, if he wanted to start a screen printing business, he said yes. She ordered a screen print machine and her son taught himself how to screen print making printed shirts and separations for Coke and other businesses, which he continues to do now.
