All of our online only auctions are conducted using a soft close. This means even if an item is scheduled to close at a particular time, if someone places a bid in the last two minutes, two minutes will be added to the scheduled close time for that particular lot. Carved soapstone rhino by a master carver of Kenya...10 in. x 20 in. x 8 in.
This rhino was carved by a master carver of the Akamba Tribe in the village of Kissii in the far Western part of Kenya in East Africa.

The process begins with the sculptor walking down to the quarry on the edge of Kissii Village. He selects a piece of rock that appeals to him. this quarry and the mountain it sits on- is the principal source of soapstone in Kenya. Once he has selected his chosen piece of rock, the sculptor pays the quarry-man for the stone who carves it of the the ground and brings  the large chunk of stone in a wheelbarrow to the work space of the sculptor in the village. the colors in the stone are natural and the sculptor follows the flow of the stone.
 This Turning rhino is the most difficult one to carve- note the following elements: 
1. The sense of motion and gait in the legs.
2. The realistic tilt of the head.
3. The bend in the body-with subsequent "swinging of the weight in his belly" 
There is no doubt that this id s genuine work of art. 
the rhino departed Mombasa, Kenya in late June, 2004 and arrived in port of Maine in August, 2004.
