Hello!  Hope everyone is enjoying the cool fall weather.  We are absolutely thrilled to host the Estate Sale of Gus D. and Mary B. Kokinos.  Talk about local history.  This home is like a well preserved time capsule.  The home was built around 1890 and is located in the Historic Henry Bry District.  The Kokinos' moved to the home in 1938.  They were married for 50 years and raised eight children together.  Mr. Kokinos died in 1965, and Mrs. Kokinos died in 1995.  Their son, Harry, resided in the home until his death last year.  The owner of the estate is Gus and Mary's grandson, Gus D. Kokinos of Bosco, La.  He has been so generous to share the wonderfully interesting history of his family.

Mr. Kokinos was from Corinth, Greece.  Mrs. Kokinos was born in Palermo, Sicily.  In the beginning, they had difficulty communicating with one another because Mary spoke no English and Mr. Kokinos spoke very little.  The language barrier didn't stop this couple from falling madly in love and eloping.

Mr. Kokinos was the first man to bring pasteurized milk to Monroe and the surrounding area.  He started the Ice Cream Business in 1916 (originally named Purity Maid and later changed to Kokinos Purity Ice Cream Co.)  He went on to buy and sell buildings and property in Downtown Monroe and across town.  He was the Honorary Mayor of downtown's Little Chicago for many years.  Mr. Kokinos founded and built St. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church on Forsythe.  He personally funded the building of the church.

Mr. Kokinos was instrumental in bringing several people from Greece to Monroe and funded their new lives in America.  After WWII he was one of a few living in America that were allowed back in Greece following the end of the war.  He supplied financial aid to many people in the war stricken area where he was born.

Gus and Mary entertained dignitaries and hosted many Greek parties over the years. Also, they loved to travel around the world.  On several occasions, they would spend three months at a time in Europe.
