HUGH S. BELL, SR. When I was a little girl, my great-grandfather seemed like any other little old man with gray hair and a newsboy cap. Little did I know what a full and creative life he had lived. Born in Missouri in 1899, he and his family moved to Ohio during World War I. Soon after graduating from college he joined the staff of the Cleveland Natural History Museum. In the early 1920’s, he left the museum to become a free-lance photographer and lecturer, journeying out west in his Model T Ford with his camera, tripod, and stash of glass photographic plates in search of material to use back home where he would present lectures at the museum. His trips were funded by the Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper in exchange for articles and photographs. During these trips he explored several national park areas, among them the natural stone arches found in Moab. He personally named three of the arches, though only one of his names (Double-O Bridge) has survived in use today. Look carefully if you ever visit these natural wonders, and you may find the small inscription he left in 1927. After a doctor advised him to move out west for his wife’s health, he along with his wife and boys headed to Leupp, Arizona where they lived among the Navajo. He took a job as a skilled laborer for the U.S. Indian Service in 1933 and continued his passion for photography among the Navajo, Hopi, and Zuni people of the area. It was during this time that his love for these cultures began. They called him Hosteen Dahatihi or “He Who Hovers Over the Flowers,” a nickname derived from his habit of planting flowers around all the government buildings where he worked. He left Arizona in the late 1930’s to work at Cal Tech in Pasadena, CA during World War II, but it was not long before he returned to where his heart was: with the Navajo. This time he came as a missionary with a deep desire to share his faith with the people he had lived with for so many years. He designed special phonographs that could be used in remote areas of the reservation with no power access, and he worked with native speakers to record Gospel records in Navajo, one of the most difficult languages on the planet to learn. Over the years, his gorgeous photographs of nature and the native cultures out west were featured in several publications, including National Geographic, the Cleveland Plain Dealer, and several smaller nature magazines. His photographs were also displayed in the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C. in the late 1920’s. These photos tell his story: him in his younger days feeding a black bear cub by hand, the bright smile he captured on the face of the little Navajo baby resting in a cradle board, his wife and children sitting on the edge of the Grand Canyon, his son cuddling the owls they raised from hatchlings. Though he passed away over 20 years ago, the photographs and artifacts he left behind continue his legacy as a man who loved life, his Creator, and His amazing creation.
