It is important to honor the branches of this prestigious collection to understand the pieces we’re offering for sale. This estate, a modern day Gardner museum, included pieces by Picasso, Monet, Cezanne, Daumier, Degas, Delacroix, Gericault and Henry Moore. These important pieces now reside as part of the permanent collection at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and Fogg Art Museum. Featuring sculptures and artists from the Whitney Museum 1973 Biennial. The 1973 Biennial helped to usher in the era of post-modernism.

Find shape and effect of mass and volume in a selection of larger than life modernist sculptures from Michael Steiner. 

Michael Steiner is a member of the Bennington school, abstract artist associated with Bennington College in Vermont. He is best known for his geometric abstract sculpture. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1971. His work is in collections world wide. These include Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art and others.

Find another featured artist of the Whitney Museum's 1973 Biennial, Jules Olitski. Olitski is credited with helping develop the movement of Color Field painting in the mid-1960s and a style of his own invention. He was given the first solo exhibition for a living American artist at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1969.

A month after the 1973 Biennial closed, Pablo Picasso, the titan of modernism, died at his hilltop villa in France. Picasso is one of the most iconic Modern artists, working in every medium from paintings to drawings to prints and sculpture. In the 1940's a visit to Madoura ceramic works in Vallauris, France, inspired him to create his now well-known ceramic editions.

We are honored to offer the clever, the humorous, embodying both the owl and the vase forms at the same time, Chouette aux taches (A.R. 120). This Spotted Owl Madoura vase was conceived in 1951 and executed in an edition of 300.

Find roiling surfaces in Susan Roth's Sault Ste. Marie. Inspired and given the namesake of Sault Ste. Marie, both Michigan's oldest city and among the oldest cities in the United States,  and the much-larger city of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. The two are connected by the Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge. This portion of the river contains the Soo Locks, as well as a swinging railroad bridge, and is situated at the rapids of the St. Mary's River. The rapids, harnessed for hydroelectric power generation, connect Lake Superior with Lake Huron.

Roth is widely reviewed and her work can be found in prestigious collections world wide including the Smithsonian, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and others.

Additional items include a unique collection of sterling pieces from the early 19th century to midcentury design by Hector Aguilar. 

Featuring Hector Aguilar for Taxco sterling and rosewood four piece serving set, circa 1950's. Hector Aguilar was a master silversmith, jewelry maker, and the first graduate from William Spratling famous apprenticeships in Taxco, Mexico. Hector Aguilar's work helped popularize Mexican silver in the 1940s and 1950s. As with most of the Mexican silversmiths from this time, these designs were heavily inspired by pre-Columbian artifacts and the folk art of Mesoamerica. Aguilar’s pieces are highly sought after.

Pierre Marly vintage glasses. Thanks to Pierre Marly, glasses were elevated to the status of fashion accessory. Manipulating dimensions, shapes and colors to create bold, stylish, high-performance eyewear, he quickly earned the nickname “couturier des lunettes”, the eyewear couturier, designing eyewear for the most famous and influential people of the day. In 1952 he designed the enormous sunglasses with domed lenses for Audrey Hepburn that caused a sensation.
