The Hunt continues with Be Still My Heart in Chestnut Hill!

Welcome to the home of Bernard Lown, an innovative cardiologist, antiwar activist and Nobel laurate. His research record is extraordinary in its reach and the extent to which it changed clinical practice across the world. His insights were often initially controversial but have undeniably stood the test of time. As Lown himself wrote: “I prefer to go out on a limb for one simple reason: that is where the fruit grows.”

Join us in honoring and celebrating the life and legacy of the man of the man who created the first effective heart defibrillator, founded Physicians for Social Responsibility, the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War and The Lown Institute, with 21 honorary degrees, and even a bridge named after him (the bridge that connects the cities of Lewiston and Auburn in Maine was renamed The Bernard Lown Peace Bridge).

In the early 1940's Dr. Lown was expelled from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine for altering blood-bottle labels that denoted donors' race. The altering was done in an act of protest, according to the American Medical Association. He was reinstated and graduated with a medical degree from Johns Hopkins in 1945. He described how his moral conception of medicine was shaped by his Jewish heritage, citing this passage from the Talmud: “Who can protest an injustice and does not is an accomplice.”
