Hello All, This week we invite you to a lovely sale in Hillsborough. He was born in San Jose in 1920. At 22, he closed up the family business and moved with his parents and 5 siblings into an internment camp. From there, he was drafted into the US military, eventually serving in Kobe, Japan. It was during the war, while serving in Japan, he met the love of his life. When the war ended, he returned home to reunite with his family and take over the family business. But his love was still in Japan. He was able to receive a special accommodation from the US Government, the first of its kind and bring his love to the US. They were married in 1949. Together, they raised their family, grew the family business and founded a church in RWC. They were married 67 years before she passed in 2017.
Truly, he was a special man. Always ready with a warm smile. He is credited with the concept of selling plants in grocery stores, prior to that, only cut flowers were sold in grocery stores. In 1994, he was named the Flower Marketer of the year. He was also named the grower of the year in 1990 & 1998. In 2011, he received the Nisei Soldiers of WW2 Congressional Gold Medal.
On the morning of his 100th birthday, he woke up and yelled, "I made it!". They celebrated with a fun pandemic drive by passing out bottles of Martinelli's apple cider. This month he would've turned 102! This weekend I am honored to host their sale.
