This bank has been closed down for the last 40 years. One day on a riverbank next to Henry Holcomb's sawmill, workmen drilling a well to tap the brine pool were splashed when water burst from the wellpipe. To the surprise of everyone, drinking the water and letting the water soak a worker's pair of ailing hands, brought about healings.
Word spread that water from St. Louis springs cured ailments and even magnetized knives!
The influx of visitors in ensuing years demanded new hotels.
Businessman Hiram Harrington built the seventh and final hotel on the southwest corner of Mill and Saginaw streets. Made of brick, it rose three stories, and was built around a courtyard that provided light to the inner rooms. It housed a bank on the first floor.
(Footnote: as the story goes, over ensuing decades, hotel rooms at 137 N. Mill were converted into rental apartments, a Masonic Lodge meeting room on the top floor, and in modern times became a location of a bank on the first floor. It has remained vacant and privately owned over 40 years).
Taken from "St Louis at 150 The Story of The Middle of the Mitten" by David McMacken 2003. A special thanks to Rosemary Horvath For this information.
