The auction includes an exceptional group of works by Louis Tavelli, representing various series from his artistic career. His "Abstract Landscape" series demonstrates his exploration of color and form, while pieces from his "Groups," "Fear," and "Paleolithic Paintings on Paper" series reveal his diverse artistic interests and techniques. These works span oil on paper, mixed media, and collage formats.
Philadelphia artist Philip Paul is represented by four carved limestone sculptures, including figural works and a mother and child relief. Paul was an honoree of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and his Judaica-themed sculptures reflect his cultural heritage and artistic skill.
The collection encompasses works from various artistic movements and periods. European influences appear through pieces like an 1853 Dutch School winter scene and works by Antoni Clave and Hans Erni. American artists are well-represented, including Mitchell Jamieson, Mary Whyte, and Edward Scirrotto, whose watercolors capture diverse subjects from winter landscapes to forest streams.
Traditional subjects receive contemporary treatment in works by Gary MacWilliams, whose oil paintings depict Lancaster County scenes, coastal landscapes, and seasonal imagery. The auction also features folk art pieces by Donna Lacey-Derstine, including animal portraits and rural landscapes that demonstrate the enduring appeal of American folk traditions. International printmakers contribute to the collection's diversity, with works by Fumio Tomita's geometric silkscreens and Lebadang's surreal lithographs. The sale includes historical pieces such as "The Quorn Hunt" engraving published by Rudolph Ackermann and a print after James Abbott McNeill Whistler.
Contemporary works balance traditional approaches, including Al Barker's watercolor landscapes and Joy Ottey McDonald's architectural studies. The collection also features reproduction pieces and prints that make accessible works by recognized masters.
From intimate still lifes to expansive landscapes, the auction offers works suitable for various collecting interests and budgets. The diversity of mediums—oil paintings, watercolors, prints, sculptures, and mixed media—ensures broad appeal. Many pieces include provenance information and artist signatures, adding to their collectible value. This sale represents an opportunity to acquire quality artwork across multiple price points and artistic styles.
