The Mid-Century Modern Auction includes a broad offering of furniture, lighting, sculpture, artwork, ceramics, glass, and decorative objects from American, Scandinavian, and European designers. Early entries include art glass and modern decorative pieces, with works attributed to Kaj Franck, Murano studios, kiln-formed chargers, and various fused and blown glass forms. Danish silver appears with a pair of Anton Michelsen serpentine sterling candlesticks.

Auction is open for pre-bidding at alderferauction.com until Wednesday, December 10th at 10AM, at which time pre-bidding will cease and the auction will go live at the auction center (no live audience, just our auctioneer and auction staff).

Furniture forms one of the largest sections of the sale. Designers represented include Charles & Ray Eames with a Herman Miller LCW chair, Hans Olsen with the Frem Røjle “Roundette” dining set, and Niels Koefoed with “Lis” teak dining chairs. American Mid-Century furniture appears with the Broyhill “Brasilia” breakfront and Brasilia serving cart, along with wardrobes, dressers, dining tables, and seating in walnut, teak, and mixed modern materials. Additional entries include an Edward Wormley for Dunbar dining table, Danish lounge chairs, tile-top coffee tables, rattan seating, and a wide range of American and Scandinavian modern case goods.

The sculpture and art category includes a Harry Bertoia Sonambient sound sculpture, an expressive copper-and-brass kinetic work. Modern figurative sculpture appears with Reg Butler, along with the bronze “Astra” by Erte (Romain de Tirtoff). Studio pottery includes the well-known McCarty’s Pottery hippo sculpture, along with additional hand-thrown and decorative ceramic works. Fine art selections include modern prints and works by Andy Warhol and Alex Katz, adding notable postwar American artists to the auction.

Lighting and design objects include the Shiro Kurimata for Yamagiwa “K-Series” lamp, as well as a range of Mid-Century metalwork and table lighting. Mechanical design is represented with the Jaeger-LeCoultre rhodium-plated Atmos clock, an iconic engineering-based object of the period.
