This is the first of three online auctions to settle the estate of Ralph Kinney Bennett. Bennett was a distinguished American journalist and author whose career spanned more than three decades, most notably as a writer in the Washington bureau of Reader’s Digest. Over the course of his career, he interviewed many notable figures, including celebrities, politicians, and heads of state, Over the course of his career, he interviewed many notable figures, including Ronald Reagan, Martin Luther King and Bob Hope. Known for his clear, engaging style and intellectual curiosity, he covered a wide range of topics, earning a reputation for thoughtful reporting and accessible storytelling.

 

Before joining Reader’s Digest, Bennett contributed to several respected publications, including The National Observer, The Philadelphia Inquirer, and the New Haven Register, where he developed his voice as a versatile and perceptive writer.

 

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Bennett had a deep passion for automobiles, a subject he followed with enthusiasm and expertise. He also maintained a strong connection to Ligonier, Pennsylvania, where he took a keen interest in the town’s history and its historic fort. Remembered as much for his distinctive personal style and commanding presence as for his writing, Bennett left a lasting impression on colleagues, readers, and his community.

 

This first auction features an exceptional collection of furnishings and decorative arts, including Tom Seely cabinets, a Stephen Von Hohen clock, an Early American mahogany pie crust tilt-top table, Queen Anne–style leather library chairs and tea table, Regency-style mahogany library steps, a 19th-century naval traveling chest, a William Fetner Keyhole Chair, a Heywood Wakefield Century maple drop-leaf table, classic Hitchcock chairs, and more.

 

Also offered is a fine selection of china, sterling flatware, and rare collectible books, highlighted by 1789 editions of The Tatler and The Spectator, the Boy Traveller’s series by T.W. Knox (marked “Thos. Mellon Jr.”), and a collection of 20 International Collectors Library volumes.

 

The sale includes original oil and watercolor artwork by artists such as Eray, Fryer, Stone, and Reba, along with works by local artists and iconic Reader’s Digest cover prints. A variety of electronics will also be available, including Bose equipment, cameras, and desk and table lamps.

 

Collectors will find a diverse assortment of cabinet photos, and other photographic memorabilia, along with vintage paper goods such as postcards, stamps, and Valentine cards. Additional offerings include vintage and foreign currency, collectibles, and an early 1900s scrapbook filled with sports reports, news, and more. The auction also features antique and decorative copper and brassware, including samovars, a striking copper eagle weathervane, and an Arthur Court 1975 aluminum fish sculpture.

 

Additional highlights include handmade wool rugs (Heriz, Persian, and others), painted toleware, a 1981 Presidential Inauguration gold-plated button set, and a collection of historical booklets and memorabilia. Fine prints round out the offering, including Golden Hours by Maxfield Parrish, ornithological lithographs by J.G. Keulemans, and hand-colored Indian lithographs by J.T. Bowen—making this a truly diverse and historically rich sale for collectors and enthusiasts alike.

 

The second and third auctions, to be announced, will include a fine Coca-Cola collection, the remaining bulk of rare and collectible books and magazines, toys, tools, sports memorabilia, and brand-name designer clothing, shoes, and accessories.
