Listing Information

In memory of former Briarcliff Manor resident Eirah Gorre-Dale, we are auctioning her collection of Bule and White pottery, which includes Japanese, Chinese, Dutch and English pieces and more, lovingly amassed over her lifetime of living in Europe and the U.S.

Part of the proceeds will benefit the restoration of the historic Tiffany windows (by the artist Agnes Northrop) of Briarcliff Congregational Church.

TIFFANY WINDOW HISTORY

Created by Tiffany Studios artist Agnes Northrop, a prolific landscape window designer, the magnificent West Transept window was installed at The Briarcliff Congregational Church in 1906, to great acclaim from congregation and community alike.

The window is regarded by experts as one of the studio's superior creations and is particularly noteworthy for the absence of any painted glass. It features a number of Tiffany Studios’ iconic glass innovations. Opalescent, foliage, and mottled glass, as well as plated areas, create various textures, hues, nuances, and effects. The upper lancets, especially, have a profusion of foliage and mottled glass.

This window is an excellent, and somewhat unusual, example of Northrop's landscape designs. It features some of the most popular details typical in her window repertoire: lush trees, a profusion of flowers (in this case, irises), and a visual device (in this window, a winding path) that leads to a distant horizon. Northrop achieves a naturalistic vanishing point by treating the farther reaches of the landscape with increasingly subdued and mottled tones.

Now 120 years old, the window is being restored to its original glory and will be reinstalled late this Fall.
