Rare Japanese Cloisonné, Furniture & Fine Decorative Arts | Exceptional Single-Owner
Collection!
Online Auction 7 PM Tuesday November 10, 2026
Bidding is open! www.tomhallauctions.com
An extraordinary single-owner collection of Japanese cloisonné enamels, furniture, and
fine decorative arts spanning the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa periods.
Assembled through years of dedicated collecting, this impressive sale features museum-scale statement pieces, rare enameling techniques, exceptional wirework, unusual forms, and finely crafted Japanese furnishings.
Cloisonné highlights include a monumental 18-inch covered vase formerly owned by the
Carnegie Museum of Art, featuring a rare goldstone ground and elaborate six-panel decoration;
an intricately executed Kyoto-style covered jar with extraordinary gold wirework,
chrysanthemums, butterflies, dragons, and Imperial Phoenix imagery; a massive Kumeno
Teitaro Uchidashi Ginbari-Jippo silver dragon vase; and a rare pair of approximately 19-inch
cloisonné vases attributed to the Namikawa Sosuke studio, depicting roosters and hens amid
snow-covered bamboo in an unusual combination of wireless and silver-wire techniques.
Also featured is a 30-inch silver-inlaid cloisonné vase previously sold through William Doyle in New
York.
Collectors will find signed Ando, Ota, and Gondo Hirosuke examples, pure-silver-marked
pieces, rare translucent Ginbari and Tomei-Jippo enamels, elusive Musen-Jippo wireless work,
richly textured Moriage raised enamels, and delicate Shotai-Jippo plique-à-jour examples.
Original Tomobako boxes, carved stands, maker's brochures, and historical documentation
accompany select pieces.
The furniture offerings include an intricately carved Japanese collectors cabinet with beveled
glass, elaborate interior shelving, dragon decoration, and a carved koi fish supporting the
shelves. Accompanied by its original key.
Also offered is an impressive 19th-century Asian apothecary cabinet with 17 drawers, decorative brass fronts, knobs, and heavy brass trim, alongside an antique Japanese inlaid marquetry jewelry chest, a bamboo-form glass-door curio cabinet, and carved wooden and lacquer stands.
Additional treasures include cloisonné boxes and plaques, a rare koro, a large red terracotta
dragon vase, a boxed ceremonial tea service, a signed Mikio Watanabe mezzotint, and
Japanese art reference books.
From flying cranes, dragons, and koi to irises, wisteria, cherry blossoms, and atmospheric
landscapes, this exceptional collection celebrates the artistry, ingenuity, and craftsmanship of
Japanese decorative arts while offering distinctive antique furnishings for collectors and design
enthusiasts alike. Detailed descriptions and condition notes are provided, and in-person
inspection is strongly encouraged. *Due to the high gloss nature of these wonderful items,
