California Artist Barbara Peterson

Sometimes a calling in life comes late and that was the case with local artist Barbara Peterson. After a lifetime of art appreciation and a passion for discovery of the talents of others, she discovered her own talent, that of a master potter.

A California native, she attended Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy and pursued higher education at the University of Iowa, where she met and married her future husband. Smart enough to bring him back to California with her, she raised a family in Long Beach in the 1950's and spent her time trying to instill her love of art with frequent trips to galleries and museums, to that sometimes unwilling group. Never having met a museum she did not love, her favorite cities were the art havens of the US and Europe. Santa Fe and Washington DC were frequent destinations of choice. Abroad, she loved London and Rome.

Locally, she was fond of visiting the LA County Museum of Art, the Getty, and the Norton Simon Museum. Somehow all of that pent-up love of art manifested itself in the 1970's when she returned to college and discovered a talent for pottery. Barbara was dedicated continuing student from that time forward attending Long Beach City College and Cypress College pursuing her love of the 'potter's life.'

Her early works will often show her name, as she was sharing kiln time with other students. Later she obtained her own kiln and worked out of this house. No clay project was too big or too small for her. Whether it was a simple bowl or coffee cup or the massive wall hanging "SEA FLOOR", she was always busy working on her next inspiration. She worked with the instructors, but loved interacting with fellow younger artists sharing techniques and ideas.

Soon, of course, this became a house of pottery. There was no need to visit a department store for dinnerware, it was all homemade. The same was true for garden pots and containers. She experimented continually with glazes and designs. She would occasionally show her work at the college workshops, but her best works stayed at home or were gifts to others. In another era, she might have combined her skills with business, but in her time she was content. Her works speak simply for themselves...with love.
