PROVENANCE
This is the estate sale for George McDougal Lockwood Jr, a harbor pilot for the Port of Charleston and the son of the famous Charleston Harbor Commander, Captain George McDougal Lockwood. However there are many wonderful treasures from the Lockwood Family dating to the 18th, 19th & 20th c. and including the Commander's leather jacket. Captain George McDougal Lockwood, was once awarded the title of "Greatest Yachtman In The World" by Who's Who in Yachting. In 1934, he founded the Charleston Yacht Club and in 1943 he co-founded the South Atlantic Yacht Racing Association. Capt. Lockwood was instrumental in the war effort during WWI & WWII and ensuring that the Charleston Harbor was safe. Under his command, he guided supply ships into the harbor during WWI and during WWII he guided the hospital ships coming into port. Throughout his sailing career he logged more than 118,000 hours on the high seas having won 43 first place sailing trophies with his 50'-0" sloop, the Lone Star. POSH is blessed to be part of this wonderful sale and a righteous tribute to this great family. BTW, Lockwood Drive was named after Grandfather Lockwood who started a shipping company named White Stack in 1882 and whose bulldog was the mascot for the Citadel. for many years. So much history in such a great family!!!
